French Prosecutors Launch Probe Into Israel’s Treatment of Flotilla Activists

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into allegations of abuse against activists detained by Israeli forces after a Gaza-bound aid flotilla was intercepted earlier this month.

The move came after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said reports from French nationals involved in the mission described serious mistreatment that could amount to criminal offences if confirmed. The investigation will focus on claims made by several activists who were held after Israeli forces stopped the flotilla at sea.

According to reports, activists accused Israeli authorities of physical violence humiliation harsh detention conditions, and sexual abuse during their time in custody. Organisers of the flotilla said some participants needed medical treatment after being released. Israel has denied the accusations and rejected claims of abuse.

The flotilla was part of an international campaign aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenging Israel’s blockade of the territory. Israeli forces intercepted the boats in international waters before towing them to Israel where many activists were later deported.

French authorities said they decided to start the investigation after diplomats spoke with the activists following their release. Officials in Paris said that if the accusations are confirmed, the people responsible could face legal action under French law.

The case has added further tension between France and Israel. In recent days, French officials have openly criticised the treatment of activists detained during the flotilla operation. France also recently banned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering French territory after controversy surrounding comments and videos linked to the activists’ detention.

International criticism has continued to grow as activists from several countries described similar experiences after being released. Canadian and Australian officials have also raised concerns and called for investigations into the treatment of their citizens who took part in the flotilla mission.

Human rights groups have urged independent investigations into the incident saying the allegations are serious and require full transparency. Israeli authorities however insist that detainees were treated according to the law and have dismissed the accusations as false.

The investigation by French prosecutors is expected to examine witness statements, diplomatic reports, and medical evidence provided by the activists. Lawyers representing some of those detained are also preparing separate legal complaints related to alleged violence, torture, and sexual assault during detention.

The flotilla incident has once again drawn international attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the growing political tensions surrounding aid missions attempting to reach the territory.
